With an enrollment of 5,208, the class of 2028 is the third-largest in the University of Iowa’s history, according to a report released Thursday.
According to the report, the incoming class number is up 144 from last fall. The total enrollment of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students adds up to 30,779 students, is comprised of:

Incoming students represent 92 of the 99 Iowa counties, with 2,813 or 53 percent of them being Iowa residents. The students also represent 45 different U.S. states and territories and 46 countries.
This year’s first-year students are tied with the class of 2027 for high school grade-point average at 3.83, according to the release.
“This reflects ongoing efforts by the UI Office of Admissions to recruit high-ability students,” the release states.
The report found 19 percent, or 1,003, of the class of 2028 identify as first-generation students, and more than half, or 2,822, of the overall first-years came in with transfer credit.
Brent Gage, the UI’s associate vice president for enrollment management, expressed his excitement to welcome the class of 2028 to campus in the report.
“After receiving a record number of applications, the enrollment management team partnered with faculty and stuff from across campus to enroll this talented group of students,” he said. “We are confident this class will thrive both in and out of the classroom as they become part of the Iowa campus community.”
