Iowa picked up a 19-10 win over Illinois on Saturday, ending the Illini’s four-game winning streak.
With it being Senior Day and setting the stage for the regular-season finale against Nebraska on Nov. 29, the Hawkeye players and coaches had a lot to say.
Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz on tying Hayden Fry for most Big Ten victories:
“Probably means I’ve been here a while, whatever it is, 21 years now plus nine, so 30 years. But I was just saying in there, if you had asked me in 1981, I didn’t know where Iowa was, why anybody would live there, and I think if you asked Coach Fry the same thing in 1970, he’d probably tell you the same thing. It’s interesting how life goes sometimes, but I think — I don’t want to speak for him — but I think what he found here was pretty good, and I know how he feels about this state, this university today, and ditto with me. I just feel very fortunate.”
Wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette on Nate Stanley’s scramble and 40-yard pass to him:
“It was a layup for me. More so of a half-court shot for him.”
Ferentz on how he was hired at Iowa
“I applied for three jobs that spring in 1981. One at Appalachian State, no interview. One at Hawai’i, I got a phone call. The guy said, ‘Hey, we need somebody that knows the West Coast.’ I don’t even know why he called me; that was stupid, but he did. But I’ve never forgotten that, and I’ve tried to carry that with me and remember it, and I’m a fan of his. And the other one was Coach Fry, and my mentor Jim Moore talked him into interviewing me.”
Linebacker Kristian Welch on his relationship with quarterback Nate Stanley:
“Nate and I roomed together in the dorms. We’ve lived with each other for three years now plus the dorms. We know each other like brothers. We hang out like we’re not even on the team. We’ll go and do outdoors stuff together. We’re just people. We’ll talk about football every now and then, but we’re just really good buddies.”
Iowa defensive end A.J. Epenesa on how he would attack the Hawkeye defense:
“I don’t want to answer that because someone’s going to [read] this, and they’re going to do it.”
Ferentz on Stanley’s career-high 22 rushing yards
“We may even move him to running back this week.”
Kicker Keith Duncan on a potential trick play on a kick
“We were successful with a lot of fakes last year… We got some tricks up our sleeve.”
