The Cloakroom: Caucus Culture part 1: history and purpose

Iowa caucus expert David Redlawsk says Iowa became the political epicenter of the U.S. every four years “by accident.”

Jake Nemmers, Audio Producer

What exactly is a caucus? And why is Iowa’s first? For this episode of The Cloakroom, The Daily Iowan sat down with Professor David Redlawsk to discuss how Iowa’s caucuses began and why the Hawkeye State keeps up this quirky political tradition. Redlawsk currently chairs the Political Science and International Relations Department at the University of Delaware and authored the book “Why Iowa?” which dissects the Iowa Caucus’ history and purpose. He’s now on campus at the University of Iowa as a visiting professor to conduct caucus-related research with students.
