INDIANAPOLIS No. 10 Hawkeye women’s basketball took down Indiana, 70-61, in Iowa’s first action at the Big Ten Tournament, but not without help from guard Makenzie Meyer and forward Hannah Stewart.

The game was a grind for the Hawkeyes, who dropped the previous matchup with the Hoosiers on Feb. 21 in Bloomington. But that loss gave Iowa much-needed energy entering the game and eventually helped the Hawkeyes come out on top.

Forward Hannah Stewart and guard Makenzie Meyer complemented that energizing effort on the Iowa side of the ball. The duo has had their fair share of troubles this season with injuries and difficult stretches, but they came up big for the Hawkeyes in the win.

Meyer hasn’t had the year she’s wanted from beyond the arc – she shot 37.8 percent from 3-point range last year – but that dropped to 31.8 percent this season. Meyer missed her first two shots of the game against Indiana, but the junior dropped a buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter to give the Hawkeyes a 6-point lead heading into the break.

“I missed two 3s early, and that’s always tough as a shooter, you like to see one of the first couple of shots go down,” Meyer said. “Once I saw that three go down at the end of the first quarter, it kind of took the lid off the rim for me. And then throughout the rest of the game, we were just confident shooting that three.”

That confidence translated into points. Iowa shot 43.8 percent from beyond the arc tonight, with 21 of the team’s points coming from downtown.

“After playing Indiana the first time, we knew we were going to get open looks,” Meyer said.

Meanwhile, Stewart had a very solid game in the paint for Iowa. The senior gave Indiana a lot of trouble down low, meeting Indiana’s game plan of double-teaming Megan Gustafson. Head coach Lisa Bluder said utilizing Stewart was a big part of the game plan.

“I thought Hannah started us off really well,” Bluder said. “We were anticipating the [double-team on Gustafson] and I thought Hannah did a good job of cutting the back door and getting that for us.”

At the end of the game, the tandem of Stewart and Hannah Gustafson tallied 30 total rebounds. The entire Indiana team ended the matchup with 32.

The first matchup against the Hoosiers was tough for the Hawkeyes. Iowa gained a 16-point lead at halftime, but Indiana inched back to take down Iowa, 75-73.

But Iowa came up big in Indianapolis. Along with those efforts from Stewart and Meyer, Gustafson was dominant. She led both teams in points and rebounds on the floor, putting up 30 points on 17 boards.

The senior notched her 28th double-double (matching her own school record set last year) and broke her own school record for points in a season.

As a team, the game against Indiana meant another milestone: Iowa has now beaten every team in the Big Ten.

Perhaps this means a conference championship run is in the cards for the Hawkeyes.
