Men’s tennis has mixed results
The Iowa men’s tennis team competed at the Crusader Indoor Invitational hosted by Valparaiso this past weekend, the last tournament before the ever-important Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals.
The tournament was also the first time senior Nils Hallestrand and sophomore Jonas Larsen were able to compete.
In his first match of the season, Larsen picked up a victory in Flight A by beating Chicago State’s Felix Savard in two sets (6-2, 6-3).
However, Larsen had to retire prior to finishing his second match, when Mason Dragos of Butler had a lead (6-2, 2-0).
Larsen also competed in doubles action with Hallestrand, where the duo captured a big win, beating Tyler Cannon and Grant Esposito from Olivet Nazarene (6-1).
Sophomore Tony Leto continued his hot streak at Valparaiso by defeating Northwestern Ohio’s Ronnie Myburgh (6-4, 6-1).
After previously being undefeated in singles matches at tournaments hosted by Valparaiso this season, Leto ssuffered a loss in the second round to Brandon Anacona of Valparaiso (6-4, 6-1).
After Larsen was forced to stop early, only Hawkeyes Hallestrand and Leto competed on Day 2.
The two played in doubles action together for the first time this season but ended up being defeated by a duo from Butler as well as a team from Chicago State.
Leto also fell in his singles match to Kyle Dunn of Valparaiso by a score of (6-4, 6-1).
After a good start to the tournament that fell off a little bit on the second day, the Hawkeyes have another opportunity in one of the biggest tournaments of the fall season, the regionals in Stillwater, Oklahoma, this upcoming weekend.
