We Are Phil is taking over campus again to raise support for giving back.
Phil is short for philanthropy and is the University of Iowa faculty and staff campaign to give back to the school and community through donation. This week is dedicated to showing awareness for philanthropy and the campaign.
“To support students,” said Dan Matheson, a professor of Sports and Recreation. “I mean that is our mission here at the University of Iowa and the money that is donated to the university supports students.”
Matheson said he gives to Phil because he has seen the impact philanthropy can really have.
“I believe in it,” he said. “I see the difference that it makes for students and I feel honored to be a part of student success.”
Matheson was one of the many faculty and staff members at the event Sept. 30 to raise awareness for the campaign.
Over the last three years, over 1.5 billion dollars has been raised through Phil.
“We’re building culture on the campus,” said Jen Knights, the assistant director for Campus Philanthropy. “And I feel like it’s been really good in the places on campus that we’ve had that impact thus far.”
Knights said although they have raised a large sum already, she hopes, and expects, to see it grow even more in the future.
