Pocket Points, an app that awards students for staying off devices during class, is partnering with local business.
The app gives students points for having their phones locked while in class and on campus. The points can be redeemed for discounts from local businesses.
The deals offered can be anything from 10 percent off at apparel stores, to discounts at Summit, 10 S Clinton St., Z’Mariks Noodle Cafe, 19 S Dubuque St., and Cold Stone Creamery, 39 S Dubuque St.
Austin Smith, a University of Iowa junior, is responsible for bringing the new app to campus.
“We kind of wanted to give students an incentive to pay attention in class,” he said. “So it’s rewarding students but I’m pretty sure the faculty appreciate it too.”
Smith said it was difficult to get the app to started at the UI, but now there are about 2,000 users.
