Charges against a North Liberty woman accused of breaking a spork were dismissed by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office’s request.

Tera Harris, 25, was charged Sunday with fifth-degree criminal mischief. However, the Johnson County prosecutor, at the Sheriff’s Office’s request, dismissed the charges Tuesday morning, a press release said.

According the release, Harris was being disruptive, combative, and difficult to handle in the jail. Harris was given food after normal inmate feeding times.

She reportedly started throwing food around the cellblock and the intentionally broke a spork, which was captured on video, the release said. The sporks are specially designed for the institution to be washed and reused, and they are supposed to be semi-indestructible.

The decision to charge Harris is not uncommon in the jail, but in this case, officials decided to handle the incident internally using an inmate-rules violation instead of pursing a criminal violation.

Harris was in custody on other more serious charges.
