The Iowa City City Council will discuss a motion Tuesday setting a public hearing in November to consider an ordinance to create a self-supporting municipal improvement district in and around downtown.
The Planning and Zoning Commission voted in favor of the district earlier this month after the requirements for a petition were met.
"It’s an important step forward. I think this is a very substantial move," said Karen Kubby, owner of Beadology, 220 E. Washington St. "This is bringing together different and independent voices to find a common activity to promote a commercial area."
A public hearing is set for Nov. 1, Nov. 22, and a final hearing Dec. 6.
