In July, the Iowa City School District was fined over $25,000 by the Internal Revenue Service for a late tax payment.
Payroll taxes for checks issued March 11 were sent March 15th, one day later than the March 14 due date, after officials discovered the taxes had not yet been paid.
District officials did amit to bookkeeping errors which led to over $2M in expenditures being budgeted twice, which may possibly have been a factor in the late payroll tax payment.
The fine was repealed by the executive director of administrative services, Paul Bobek who is waiting for word on whether or not it will be returned. To ensure an error such as this does not happen again, reminders have been placed on the business office calendar.
