This graph shows the increase in PAULA, unlawful use of an authentic driver’s license/ID, possession of an open alcohol container, presence in a bar after hours, and public-intoxication tickets from the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before classes in 2010 and 2011.
Iowa City police Lt. Kevin Heick said the increase could be attributed to the two extra officers put on patrol in and around downtown.
The biggest increase in tickets was PAULAs, which went from 18 opening weekend in 2010 to 38 in 2011. Heick said he did not feel the increase in citations was related to the 21-ordinance.
On Aug. 19, Sgt. Denise Brotherton told The Daily Iowan the department plans to continue the party patrol this fall, and keeping downtown controlled will help the police to keep officers in the neighborhoods. Brotherton said the department will adjust accordingly.
“We’ll be downtown, we’ll see how the downtown is and adjust accordingly,” Brotherton said. “Last year, it was quiet, but in the early evening hours, it seemed to pick up — watching that and adjusting accordingly.”
