The Iowa City School District posted a redistricting update in question-and-answer format on its website March 10.

After the redistricting committee rescheduled its March 4 meeting, community members raised concerns about the progress of the boundary changes.

The document said the committee and RSP & Associates, the advising firm, will likely make several revisions to the scenarios.

Scenario 3A, which calls for a brand-new junior high serving grades seven through nine, is “probably not” viable, the document said, because of the inconvenience of the projected location as well as increased transportation costs.

Scenario 3B, proposing a third high school, will still be considered. Enrollment for the new building would be ninth grade only, with the district then having the option to gradually move other grades into the facility for an eventual grades nine through 12 school.

The elementary schools’ makeup will essentially remain the same as in Scenarios 3A and 3B. The committee will, however, discuss an additional scenario that more heavily stresses the district’s “neighborhoods intact” criterion.

The redistricting committee will hold its next meeting at 5:30 p.m. March 24.
