A section of the bank on the Iowa River indicate sloughing of the soil into the river on May 22, 2019. As flooding increases, the banks of streams become steep, decreasing habitability for wildlife and decreasing the likelihood that nitrates will be absorbed into vegetation along the river banks.

The EPA recommends nitrate levels below 10 mg/L for consumable groundwater. If levels rise above 10 mg/L, it poses hazards for human consumption and wildlife habitats downstream.

Along the way, DI photojournalist Ryan Adams will conduct nitrate tests of the water and speak with local farmers, Iowa citizens, and those along the riverbanks to understand how Iowans view the issue.
