A Coralville man was sentenced to 13 years in federal prison stemming from two counts of felony possession of a firearm and one count of intent to distribute a controlled substance.
Ricardo Steward, 46, was found guilty and sentenced on March 25.
According to court documents, on Feb. 14, 2025, authorities found Steward knowingly possessing less than 50 kgs of marijuana with the intent to distribute. The maximum sentence for the charge is five years in federal prison.
Police also found Steward in possession of a loaded firearm. Steward’s possession of the firearm led to him being charged with two federal charges: possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and felon in possession of a firearm because of his felon status.
He was found not guilty on the furtherance charge, according to court documents.

The maximum sentence for a furtherance charge is life in federal prison and the maximum sentence for felony possession of a firearm is 10 years in federal prison.
The court recommended Steward be placed in a facility as close to eastern Iowa as possible to allow for family visitation and access to any substance abuse treatment programs.
According to court documents, Steward will also have to participate in an approved program for domestic violence via the court’s decision. He will also have to pay a lump sum of $200 in criminal monetary penalties.
After completing his sentence, Steward will be required to serve a four-year term of supervised release as there is no parole offered in the federal system.
