The Daily Iowan: What is your favorite memory with the squad over the years?
Hanna Castillo: When the freshmen came in this year, I took them to get Pho soup. I didn’t really like the soup, but I had a fun time getting to know them.
What or who got you into gymnastics?
My sister started in gymnastics when she was 5, and when she started, I was apparently running through the gym and doing tricks, and they were like, “We will take her, too.”
Of the vault, beam, and floor, which one do you prefer most?
I would say floor. I have a really big personality, like being out there and having all the attention.
What is your favorite competition or event that you have competed in?
At the Michigan State home meet my freshmen year, I got my first 9.9 ever on floor, and I have been chasing that high ever since.
If you did not do gymnastics, what sport would you play and why?
Equestrian because I love horses.
Biggest difference between Iowa and Florida?
The weather! Once it hits like 50 degrees, I bring out two hoodies, two sweatpants, and I do enjoy the snow, but it is still scary to drive.
Why do you do uneven bars?
Back in freshman year, I hurt my shoulder, and had to decide if I wanted surgery or to continue in the other events.
Why are you majoring in criminology, law, and justice?
My sister is a detective down in Daytona Beach, Florida, and my uncle was a homicide detective, so I think crime just runs in the family.
Of your two career-high scores last year, which one were you most excited about?
I would definitely have to say vault because I have only ever stuck to vaults in my entire gymnastics career, and both came in college. I was in utter shock.
