There’s something universally appealing about a well-earned vacation. Who doesn’t enjoy the idea of a getaway after a long year of hard work? However, I’m not one to go to the same destination year after year. While simple places like Florida or California have their charm, true adventure lies in exploring new countries and embracing diverse cultures.
You might wonder, isn’t a vacation all about relaxation? It can still be relaxing, but integrating cultural experiences into your travels can turn a simple getaway into a rich tapestry of knowledge and enjoyment. In our world, understanding different cultures has never been more vital or rewarding.
Our country is a vibrant tapestry of numerous cultures, each contributing to the rich diversity that defines us. While it may not always be visible at first glance, this cultural blend can be seen in everyday aspects of our lives.
For instance, the mix of ethnic restaurants that line our streets, from the savory aromas of Chinese dishes to Mexican cuisine. They serve as a delicious reminder of our multicultural heritage we welcomed into our country.
Moreover, our daily lives are influenced by a multitude of cultural practices, from the clothing we wear to the tools we use. Each item we take for granted has a story and a history that traces back to various parts of the world.
Unfortunately, the shadows of racism and discrimination continue to linger within our society. Despite living in a land celebrated for its diversity, there are still frequent instances where individuals feel compelled to define “us” versus “them.”
We often demand that those who are different from us, particularly immigrants, adopt our language and customs, sometimes forgetting the challenges they face in adapting to a new culture.
Ironically, when we venture into other countries, we can quickly come to understand how daunting it can be to navigate a different set of societal norms and expectations. This realization should foster empathy and encourage us to approach our diverse population with kindness and understanding instead of judgment.
Embracing diversity and building bridges across cultural divides is not just an ideal; it’s an essential step toward fostering a more inclusive and harmonious society.
I’ve come to realize that traveling and immersing ourselves in new cultures can completely transform our perspectives. It’s not just about seeing new places, it’s about gaining a deeper understanding and empathy for others. That shift in viewpoint is one of the most rewarding outcomes of cultural exploration.
Back in 2024, I participated in a study abroad program in Germany. The experience was eye-opening and confirmed everything I believed about the power of travel.
At a study abroad fair in the Iowa Memorial Union and during my travels, I met countless others who echoed my feelings — how getting out of our comfort zones and embracing new cultures can reshape our understanding of the world. It’s truly amazing to see how these journeys bond us and broaden our horizons in ways we might never expect.
Rachel Hahn, a study abroad manager at Youth For Understanding, a global nonprofit student exchange program, is dedicated to helping students and teens embark on their adventures abroad. She’s passionate about the transformative power of these experiences.
“The goal is to help us get a little uncomfortable, see the world in a new way by being in a totally different cultural and family environment,” she said. “It is truly changing the trajectory of the lives of all involved.”
Hahn said studying abroad allows students to develop maturity and independence and can change their priorities, career goals, and personal relationships.
Youth For Understanding offers a wide range of study abroad programs designed for students of all ages, from high school to college. With countless countries to explore and plenty of scholarship opportunities available.
I also reached out to the University of Iowa’s International Program but was unable to get a direct comment. So I checked out the International Program’s website, and I was really pleased to see the variety of opportunities available for students looking to travel abroad. They offer over 200 different study abroad programs tailored to a wide range of majors, which is fantastic. Plus, they provide various types of support for those who might be facing financial challenges, making it accessible to more students.
But what really stood out to me was a quote from Dean Russell Ganim on the website. He described these opportunities as a way “to open the minds and hearts of our community to the reality that the world is a stronger and better place when we celebrate the humanity in every individual and in every nation.”
Ganim’s message really captures the essence of what studying abroad can offer, not just academically, but in broadening our perspectives and fostering a sense of global community. While studying abroad can feel intimidating, it’s one of the best ways to really dive into a different culture. Gaining empathy and a broader perspective is so important in today’s world.
