If you’re still in town over break, there are still plenty of arts-related events going on to keep you occupied. No matter what you’re into, there’s something for you.
Annie Jr.
The first weekend of break sees the opening of “Annie Jr.” at The James Theatre. The Nolte Academy’s youth theater group is at the center of this show which will have four showtimes beginning on Friday and running through Sunday.
Stella Standingbear
On Nov. 24. Gabe’s Iowa City is hosting a night of native hip hop featuring Stella Standingbear, Def-I, Tall Paul and Stuart James. The doors open at 5 p.m. for a 6 p.m. show.
Comedy Game Show!
On Nov. 30. Travis Coltrain will host an evening of comedy, games and prizes at The AlleyCat. The show is interactive and encourages audience participation, so it is sure to be a more active night out. Starting at 9 P.M, the show will begin with comedy and conclude with karaoke.
ICCSO concert
The Iowa City Community String Orchestra’s fall concert will be hosted at The Englert Theatre on Nov. 24. This free concert features Erin Pronto Freund on the harp and Jonah M. Gallagher as the composer.
Old Crow Medicine Show
Hancher Auditorium will host old-timey, electric folk band Old Crow Medicine Show for an evening of soulful music. This high-profile show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 23.
Death Cafe
On the last Tuesday of every month, The Green House hosts a communal conversation about death. Mindful inquiry and exploration drive the event and are meant to spark discussion about existential topics among IC’s community. The event features cake and is organized by the Death Collective of Eastern Iowa. This conversation begins at 7 p.m.
Grindhouse
Eli Roth’s 2023 slasher film “Thanksgiving” is the screening of choice on the night before Thanksgiving for FilmScene’s weekly Late Shift at the Grindhouse series. Starting at 10 p.m., this screening is the perfect way to ring in Thanksgiving for horror movie fans.
