Last week, former president Donald Trump held a rally at Madison Square Garden, an iconic venue. What transpired was a list of guests such as Hulk Hogan, Tucker Carlson, and Elon Musk. The rally gained notoriety for its racist remarks, including calling Vice President Kamala Harris the Antichrist, as well as other sexist comments.
With only days left, I have one plea to any undecided voters: Do not vote for Trump.
Throughout the campaign, Trump has supported unpopular positions and is beginning to show signs of mental decline.
One of the biggest issues in this election is abortion. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, 13 states have banned abortion with an additional eight, including Iowa, restricting access.
While abortion rights are currently determined by the states, Trump has made worrying remarks suggesting he would enact nationwide bans after a certain number of weeks. Trump has said he supports exceptions for incest and rape but would leave it up to the states to decide their own laws. This means Trump is complicit with the current bans that lack these exceptions and would not challenge a state if it decided to impose a no-exception ban.
This is a deeply unpopular position, as 63 percent of Americans support keeping abortion legal. Many Americans fear they or a loved one could be raped and forced to carry a pregnancy to term because their president will not fight to protect their rights. Â
Another major issue in this election is the economy. While inflation has been a central concern for the Biden administration, Trump’s policies would be far worse.
Trump has called for raising tariffs on goods, cutting taxes for the top 5 percent, and increasing the national debt by $8 trillion. His economic plan would not help the current situation, and even Mitch McConnell has stated that tariffs would only raise prices on goods.
Trump’s plan only benefits the wealthiest Americans while increasing national debt and hurting small business and consumers with higher prices.
Trump is also starting to show signs of mental decline. This was a concern for people on both sides during Biden’s administration, but Biden chose not to run for a second term — something Trump is unwilling to do.
Throughout his campaign, Trump has rambled incoherently during many rallies. He has praised dictators like Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping and even claimed he could have prevented the Civil War through negotiation.
If Trump wins, he will be older than Biden when he took office in 2021, making him the oldest president in office by the end of his second term. While there are ways to improve our current situation, electing another man in his 80s as president is not the solution.
With the election just days away, many voters are still undecided. While I don’t agree with Kamala Harris on everything, she is a far better candidate than Donald Trump. A second Trump term would threaten abortion rights, promote an economy that benefits only the richest Americans, and place a mentally unfit leader in the White House.
