Andrew Dunn, the Iowa City City Councilor who represents District C, announced he will be resigning from his seat on Jan. 1, 2025.
According to a release from Dunn, he decided to resign because of his increasing professional obligations that require him to spend more time out of Iowa City.
“Heading into 2025, I expect these obligations and associated travel out of town to increase,” Dunn stated in the release. “I want to ensure that Iowa Citians get the representation they deserve.”
Dunn has served on the Iowa City City Council since 2023 after being appointed to fill then-councilor Janice Weiner’s seat after she was elected to the Iowa Senate. He briefly was off the council after Mazahir Salih garnered the most votes for Weiner’s at-large seat, but he was then elected onto council again in November 2023 in an uncontested race.
During his time on council, Dunn stated he is most proud of investing in affordable housing, underestimated businesses, and establishing fare-free transit.
Dunn stated he will continue to support the city however he can when he leaves his seat.
“Although I am stepping down from this role, my commitment to Iowa City and its residents remains unwavering,” Dunn stated. “I look forward to witnessing the continued success of our community and supporting its progress in any way I can.”
The Iowa City City Council will now work to determine how it will fill Dunn’s seat following his resignation. According to state law, the city council can appoint a new member to the seat or host a special election to elect a new representative.
