A Raising Cane’s is coming to the Old Capitol Town Center on the University of Iowa campus.
The restaurant that serves mainly chicken fingers will open its seventh location in Iowa in the front-facing storefront on 201 S. Clinton St. that was previously occupied by Panera Bread from 2019-21. Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, which opened the same time as Panera, closed in January.
Hannah Henderson, Cane’s senior manager of public relations, said Wednesday that construction on the restaurant will begin next week and food will be served this fall. Henderson said it’s too early in the construction process to share an exact opening date.
City of Iowa City building permits dating back to November 2023 confirm renovations to the space that is set to convert into a Raising Cane’s.
Previously, the chain restaurant opened a location in Coralville, Iowa, in April 2022 and nationwide has more than 700 locations.
Though an official opening date has not yet been established, the City of Iowa City issued building permits to the chain restaurant that will expire between May and July of this year.
