No. 1 Penn State defeated No. 3 Iowa, 29-6, during a wrestling dual at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday.
The loss to Penn State marks Iowa’s second regular season loss. The last time Iowa had more than one regular season loss was in the 2017-18 with a final record of 12-3.
Iowa came into the historic rivalry leading the all-time series 28-12-2 as Penn State has won four of the last five meetings.
Iowa walked away winning two of the ten matches. Iowa’s No. 7 125-pound Drake Ayala defeated Penn State’s No. 2 Braeden Davis by decision, 4-2. Iowa’s No. 12 149-pound Caleb Rathjen defeated Penn State’s No. 10 Tyler Kasak in sudden victory, 11-8.
Penn State got bonus points in five of their eight wins, all of them being major decisions.
True freshman and dual-sport athlete Iowa’s 285-pound Ben Kueter made his third appearance as a Hawkeye facing off against Penn State’s No. 1 Greg Kerkvliet. Kerkvliet defeated Kueter by major decision, 9-1.
Next, Iowa will take on Wisconsin at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday, Feb. 18.
