A man has been accused of operating while under the influence and interfering with official acts.

Zahontre Chamere Eugene Byars, 26, Washington, was charged on Aug. 22 with two serious misdemeanors – driving with a revoked/denied license and operating while under the influence – a simple misdemeanor of interfering with official acts, and eluding arrest.

According to the arrest affidavit, Byars was stopped by a police officer in a marked law enforcement vehicle for lane violations and speed. The officer asked for Byars’s license, and after handing the officer his ID, rolled up his windows and sped off.

The affidavit said Byars failed to stop at both visible and audible signals, and was exceeding the speed limit by 25 miles per hour. Byars eventually stopped after stop sticks were used by Washington County.

The officer said in the affidavit that Byars showed measurable signs on field sobriety tests and refused to take a preliminary breath test and request for urine. Byars was found to be driving on a suspended license.

Eluding arrest is a Class-D felony.
