After an overtime win over Princeton last week, Iowa kept its momentum in Puerto Rico against Cincinnati on Wednesday to give head coach Lisa Bluder her 400th win as a Hawkeye.

Iowa defeated the Bearcats 69-61 to begin its play in the Puerto Rico Classic.

The Hawkeyes started the game shooting slow, making just 35 percent of their shots in the first quarter and missing every three-point shot through the game’s first 10 minutes. Although the Bearcats were still shooting a meager 38.7 percent, a strong effort on the glass gave Cincinnati a small advantage.

A more efficient second quarter effort gave Iowa a two-point advantage heading into the break, but Cincinnati made up the small deficit to make things interesting heading into the fourth quarter.

Iowa caught fire toward the end of the game however and pulled away from the Bearcats.

“This is a really good win,” Bluder said in a release. “This is a Cincinnati team that is very good and hangs its hat on defense. This is the first time we have faced that kind of pressure all year and first time we have had to face a press all year.”

Monika Czinano led the team in scoring, shooting 7-for-8 on her way to 16 points. Kathleen Doyle added 13 points, while Amanda Ollinger finished with 10.

One strength for Iowa was how it shared the ball. The Hawkeyes notched 21 assists compared to Cincinnati’s 11. Doyle contributed the most for Iowa with six.

However, Iowa was dominated on the glass once again. The Bearcats grabbed 18 rebounds to Iowa’s seven.

Iowa has a quick turnaround, as it takes on the Towson Tigers tomorrow in Puerto Rico.
