Coralville man accused of willful injury causing serious injury

A Coralville man has been accused of willful injury causing serious injury.

Walter Cole, 58, was charged on Oct. 24 with willful injury causing bodily injury and domestic abuse/assault.

According to the arrest affidavit, police arrived at 417 Heritage Place in North Liberty in response to a 911 hang-up on Oct. 24. When police arrived, the victim and Cole were both located.

Cole claimed that the victim advanced toward him with a hammer and began striking him. Cole told police that he then took the hammer and began to hit the victim with it, the affidavit said.

The victim told police that when she arrived, Cole came at her with the hammer and began to hit her, according to the affidavit. Police observed blood on the floor and swelling on the victim’s forehead. Cole was uninjured.

Cole and the victim are engaged and living together, the affidavit said.

Willful injury causing serious injury is a Class-D felony.
