A Coralville man has been accused of eluding and assault on peace officers with a weapon.

Calvin Freeman, 29, was charged Oct. 6 with OWI, assault on peace officers/others with weapon, interference with official acts, eluding, and driving while barred.

According to the arrest affidavit, police attempted to stop Freeman after he ran a stoplight on Penn Street in North Liberty. Freeman refused to stop and exceeded 25 mph over the speed limit while trying to escape law enforcement. Freeman swerved at police cars with his vehicle, the affidavit said.

The affidavit states that Freeman was stopped after his vehicle encountered police spike sticks. Once stopped, it was clear Freeman was under the influence of alcohol and empty liquor bottles littered Freeman’s car, the affidavit said. Freeman then physically resisted arrest.

Eluding and assault on peace officers with a weapon are both Class-D felonies.
