Julián Castro and John Delaney to visit Johnson County this week
Johnson County will see two presidential hopefuls visit this week.
August 13, 2019
Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro will speak on gun violence prevention at a town hall in North Liberty Wednesday. There, the Democratic presidential-nomination candidate will talk about his plan, released Aug. 9, that addresses mass shootings and gun violence and meet with Moms Demand Action volunteers. According to his website, Castro supports a gun buy-back program to reduce the number of guns in states.
His plan also calls for implementing an assault weapons ban, imposing “strict limits” on guns with high-capacity magazines, universal background checks, laws that restrict access to guns for a person whose at risk for harming themselves or others, and investing in violence-prevention programs.
After the Aug. 3 El Paso shooting and the Aug. 4 Dayton shooting left a combined total of more than 30 people killed and many injured in one weekend, gun violence has become a frequent topic of presidential hopefuls.
Former Democratic U.S. Representative from Maryland John Delaney will also be coming to Iowa City this week. The presidential hopeful will be hosting a book signing and meet and greet Thursday at High Ground Cafe. He authored “The Right Answer: How We Can Unify Our Divided Nation” in 2018.
