The police officer and suspect in the July 29 officer-involved shooting have been released from hospital, and initial charges have been filed, according to a city press release.

Cierra Lewis, 25, has been released from the hospital and transported to the Johnson County Jail. Lewis has been charged with assaulting a police officer with a weapon, a Class-D felony, and willful serious injury, a Class-C felony.

The officer has also been released from the hospital, according to the release, and has been put on administrative leave until the investigation into the incident has concluded, per departmental policy.

According to the press release, Iowa City police responded to a shoplifting complaint at a business located at 11 Highway 1 W. Lewis was located in a nearby area when officers arrived. As they were conducting the investigation, an Iowa City police officer was shot numerous times in the face with a BB gun, and the officer also fired his weapon, striking Lewis.

The investigation into the initial call is ongoing.
