Hawkeye swimming concludes Shamrock Invitational with strong performances

The Iowa swimming & diving teams traveled to South Bend, Indiana, this past weekend to compete in the Shamrock Invitational.
The Hawkeyes may not have swum away with any gold, but they dominated the podium all weekend.
On Day 1, outstanding performances from the relay teams and freshmen boosted Iowa.
To start the first day, the men’s 200-free relay of Joe Myhre, Will Scott, Jack Smith, and Aleksey Tarasenko led the charge with a second-place finish (1:20.22).
Redshirt freshman Tarasenko also helped teammates Mateusz Arndt, Thomas Pederson, and Michael Tenney finish the men’s 800-free relay with another second-place finish (6:35.03).
Individually, junior Michael Tenney took fourth in the 200 free (1:38.71). Tarasenko took second in the 50 free (20.21), closely followed by Myhre in fourth (20.24) and Scott in seventh (20.48).
Freshman Caleb Babb also had some outstanding performances. Babb swam to a career best in both the 200 individual medley (1:51.68, 9th) and the 100 breast (55.34, 4th).
On the women’s side, junior Hannah Burvill placed fifth in the 200 free (1:49.90). Sophomore Kelsey Drake (55.04) and senior Kelly McNamara (55.31) finished back-to-back in the 100 fly, earning them sixth and seventh.

Day 2 continued with promising performances from freshmen, and the diving team displayed how dominant it can be.
The women divers were the only Hawkeyes to post a first-place finish. Freshman Sam Tamborski (321.05) and sophomore Jayah Mathews (308.20) dominated the 3-meter springboard with a 1-2 finish.
Mathews also finished first on the 1 meter (292.65). Tamborski finished fourth (272.25), and junior Thelma Strandberg snared sixth (266.75).
The men divers featured senior Will Brenner (320.70) and sophomore Anton Hoherz (312.80) took home second and fourth on the 1 meter. Hoherz (339.55) and Brenner (339.50) also had a back-to-back finishes of third and fourth on the 3 meter.
On Day 2, senior Abbey Schneider (17:26.85) and freshman Andrew Fierke (15:52.10) scored two third-place touches in the 1,650 free.
Tarasenko continued his strong performances, swimming to a second place (43.89) in the 100 free — a new college best for him. Teammates junior Steve Fiolic (44.81) and Myhre (44.82), earning fourth and sixth.
Babb also continued strong, touching third in the 200 breast (2:01.11), a career best.
The Iowa men finished third (780.5 points), and the women were fourth (434.5).
The Hawkeyes will have their last meet before the Big Ten Championships, hosting Western Illinois and Northern Iowa at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center at 6 p.m. Feb. 1.
