The Iowa men’s tennis concluded fall competition with a victory in doubles in the Big Ten Indoor Championships tournament.

Competing at the Varsity Tennis Center on the Michigan campus, the Hawkeyes couldn’t advance to Day 3 of the four-day tournament, which started Oct. 26.

Although they weren’t able to advance any further in the tournament, that doesn’t mean the team played poorly. In fact, the men’s squad played quite the opposite of poor – it won the doubles championship.

On Day 1, Iowa picked up where it left off last year in the Big Ten Tournament, when it won a Big Ten-best eight matches on opening day. The Hawkeyes dominated in both singles and doubles play, picking up 12 wins – eight singles and four doubles, making it the second year in a row Iowa’s team picked up the most wins on opening day.

The Hawkeyes swept the doubles competition thanks to Oliver Okonkwo/Will Davies, Joe Tyler/Piotr Smietana, Jonas Larsen/Nikita Snezhko and Jason Kerst. After dominating doubles, Iowa swept play again in the singles Round of 64, while three other Hawkeyes got a bye.

In the Round of 32, five Hawkeyes managed to get victories – a Big Ten-best – to advance to the Round of 16.

Davies continued his winning ways, bouncing Ben Lieb of Penn State (4-6, 6-1, 6-4). Tyler battled back after dropping the first set to secure his Round of 16 spot by beating Northwestern’s Trice Pickens (4-6, 6-3, 6-3).

Larsen picked up another win in a tightly contested match against Christos Antonopoulos of Penn State (3-6, 6-4, 6-4). Okonkwo held serve against Purdue’s Stephan Koenigsfest in straight sets (6-4, 6-4). Smietana also moved on after dropping Penn State’s Noah Sutter in straight sets (6-2, 6-1).

“We were really happy with the first day at the Big Ten Tournament,” assistant coach Joey Manilla said in a release. “The team showed up ready to compete as hard they could, and the results followed.”

The Hawkeyes used the momentum from Day 1 to their advantage.

On Day 2, Iowa partners Tyler and Smietana won the Flight B bracket, which allowed them to battle Gabe Tishman/Harrison Brown of Michigan (8-7) before winning the championship match after besting Chris Dean/Isaac Nortey of Nebraska (8-4). Partners Okonkwo/Davies and Larsen/Snezhko picked up wins, which allowed Iowa to win another Big Ten-best four doubles matches on the day.

In singles, the Hawkeyes weren’t so lucky. Only Davies advanced past the Round of 16 after defeating Michigan’s Brown (6-7, 6-4, 6-4). However, Davies couldn’t get any further as he dropped his quarterfinal match to Tim Siebert of Ohio State.

Overall, it was a great display of tennis by the Hawkeyes. Many players got wins which will raise the team’s confidence going into its last fall tournament on Nov. 9 in the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. Before then, however, Iowa junior Kareem Allaf will compete in the Oracle National Fall Championships on Nov. 7 after winning the Central Regional Championship two weekends ago.
