Iowa City gets to have a spooky night in the middle of the summer at the Yacht Club for Friday the 13th.

The Yacht Club will hold a Friday the 13th event, hosted by Rock Hand Records, this Friday.
Paul Houston, one of the organizers, said he is excited because the event is something different and not usually seen in the summer.
“When you first walk in, there will be Friday the 13th movie playing in the background,” Houston said.
There will be a costume contest, and those who have the best horror-movie costumes will win prizes. The people at the venue and the bands that have been booked will be the judges of the costumes. They will announce the winners between 10 and 10:30 p.m.
Houston said he encourages everyone to dress up, noting that some of the band members will also wear costumes.
“Personally, I always try to push events like this because they tend to draw people, and they are just different,” Houston said.
It will be like Halloween in the middle of July.
The venue will have a spooky, emo-rock feel to it, Houston said. The bands that will perform play rock music in a variety of genres.
“There will be everything from standard rock and roll to punk rockfish, fast and slow rock, and just anything you can think of,” Houston said.
The four bands are Novagolde, Blist Her, and Social Que, with Buddy Danger and the Tragedy of Des Moines closing the event.
Novagolde is from Madison, Wisconsin. The musicians have a following where they are from, and they wanted to start playing outside of their comfort zone and decided to head to Iowa City for a gig.
Social Que of Chicago, which is composed of Sam Gutsmiedl and Ian Rottner, will play for the first time in Iowa City.
“We are most looking forward to having a blast with the people in the crowd and seeing who can bring the scariest costume to the show,” they said in an email to The Daily Iowan.
The Social Que membes said they will wear masks from C2E2, a Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo event they attended last year.
Houston hopes to see people in their costumes and, naturally, wants everyone to have a great time.
The event will start at 8 p.m. and end at midnight — 19 and over, $8 cover.
