Friday, February 16th, 2018 at 4:17 p.m., the Iowa City Fire Department, Coralville Fire Department, and surrounding county fire departments responded to a fire ripping through the City Carton Recycling Center, destroying more than half of the facility. The Center was primarily responsible for cardboard and paper recycling, and the thousands of bales of recycled materials helped fuel the destructive blaze. Fire crews needed only two hours to get the fire under control, but spent well over six working on making sure it was completely snuffed out. As of the reporting of this story, no one has been reported to be hurt by the fire.
