Portugal. The Man’s tour bus caught fire on South Madison Street around 5 p.m. before their concert in the IMU on Tuesday. No injuries were reported.
The fire was due to a problem in the air conditioning of the bus, Bruce McAvoy, fire safety coordinator for the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety, said.
“There was no one in the bus when the fire broke out,” McAvoy said. “We were notified by a 911 call.”
McAvoy and his team responded immediately and were trying to redirect traffic.
The block in front of the IMU was cordoned off, and students were asked to use the sidewalk in front of the parking ramp to keep the immediate surroundings clear.
“When we first got here, the flames were about 20 feet high,” UI Department of Public Safety Lieutenant Joe Lang said, who was directing traffic.
The flames were high enough to be visible from the Main Library, said UI sophomore Taylor Rook, who was headed to the IMU to study.
When asked about the fire breaking out, SCOPE Productions’ members refused to comment.
Portugal. The Man performed along with Twin Peaks at the Main Lounge of the IMU at 7 p.m.
The headliner, an alt/psych rock band from Portland, Oregon, has a hit song sometimes heard on the radio, “Feel It Still.”
The show was promoted by SCOPE Productions, a student organization on campus that offers hands-on experience in the business of music promotion, production, hospitality, marketing, talent buying, and finance.
