The trial of Lamar Wilson, the accused Pedestrian Mall shooter, began Jan. 22 in Polk County.

Wilson, 24, 2220 Arizona St., is charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, criminal gang participation, and three counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon.

Jury selection has begun in the trial, and it is expected to last two or three days. Sixth District Judge Paul Miller ruled on Nov. 3, 2017, that he will decide if Wilson’s motion to be granted immunity will be confirmed after the jury reaches a verdict in the trial.

Two people were wounded during the August shooting, and Kaleek Jones of Iowa City was killed. Officers said Wilson admitted to firing several rounds following the incident.

Wilson’s trial was originally scheduled to start Nov. 27 2017, but Wilson gave up his right to a speedy trial.

The trial will also see the use of Iowa’s new stand-your-ground defense, which says that if threatened, one is allowed to protect oneself and others by using deadly force. Wilson has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
