1. Wisconsin (11-0)
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. My Badgers are going to go 12-0, win the Big Ten title, and still not get picked for the playoffs. It’s not fair.
2. Ohio State (9-2)
Hawkeye fans will live in the glory of That Time Iowa Walloped Ohio State for the next 40 years.
3. Penn State (9-2)
I had really high hopes for this team at the beginning of the season. At least it gets to finish with a game against Maryland.
4. Michigan (8-3)
Raise your hand if you knew Wisconsin would win by at least 14 points.
5. Michigan State (8-3)
The last week of the season is fun because good teams get to play bad teams (i.e., Michigan State vs. Rutgers).
6. Northwestern (8-3)
Northwestern vs. Illinois. See previous comment.
7. Purdue (5-6)
The Boilermakers cracked the top seven with their win over Iowa. Plus, they want bowl eligibility. Bad.
8. Indiana (5-6)
But guess what, so does Indiana. It’s pretty fun that the two will play each other for that chance to make a bowl appearance.
9. Iowa (6-5)
Don’t lose to Purdue, and you won’t get dropped this low, Iowa.
10. Minnesota (5-6)
One win would mean a bowl appearance, but unfortunately for the Gophers, they have to play Wisconsin. Tough times in Minneapolis.
11. Rutgers (4-7)
Rutgers has as many conference wins as Iowa does.
12. Nebraska (4-7)
This game will be Mike Riley’s au revoir to Lincoln. I have a feeling the Huskers will pick up Bret Bielema, and that makes my stomach turn.
13. Maryland (4-7)
Remember when I ranked Maryland No. 5 earlier in the season?
14. Illinois (2-9)
To be fair, we never expected much out of you, Illinois. At least basketball season is here. Wait … never mind.
Offensive Impact
Saquon Barkley, Penn State
Running back
Junior
The Saquon Barkley we all know and love came out to play again last weekend. The junior had 224 all-purpose yards — 158 rushing — and added 3 touchdowns for the Nittany Lions. He’s won the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week four times this season. That’s wild.
Defensive Impact
Josey Jewell, Iowa
Linebacker
Senior
OK, it’s my last one of these. I had to pick my favorite rough-cut Jewell. But still, he had another great game against Purdue — 13 tackles, 2 sacks, and 3 pass breakups. The senior is only 9 tackles away from tying his single-season record, even after missing a game. That he didn’t make it to the final round of the Butkus Award is mind-boggling.
