A 6th District judge accepted a waiver Wednesday morning by Lamar Wilson to give up his right to a speedy trial. Wilson, 23, faces a murder charge, along with intimidation with a dangerous weapon and criminal gang participation, in connection with a shooting in August on Iowa City’s Pedestrian Mall.
Although the trial had been set to begin Nov. 27, 6th District Judge Paul Miller said he now expects a starting date of Jan. 22, 2018. The trial will take place in Polk County.
The downtown shooting resulted in the death of Kaleek Jones, 22, and the wounding of two others. If convicted, Wilson faces life in prison without the possibility of parole on the first-degree murder charge.
