Daily Iowan Sports Editor Adam Hensley caught up with defensive back Manny Rugamba, a sophomore from Naperville, Illinois.
Daily Iowan: Who would you say is the most difficult receiver on the team to cover one-on-one?
Manny Rugamba: Probably Noah Fant. He has a different type of body. He’s a tight end, but he’s a receiver. He’s a big guy, he’s a fast guy, and he’s a strong guy. He’s very quick.
DI: Who do you model your game after?
Rugamba: I wouldn’t say I necessarily model my game after anyone, but one of my favorite cornerbacks is Marcus Peters of the Kansas City Chiefs.
DI: What do you try to take away from his game that you can use with yours?
Rugamba: He’s a very physical guy. He’s violent with the way he plays the game.
DI: If you couldn’t play football, what sport would you play?
Rugamba: I’d definitely play golf professionally. You can play forever and never get hurt.
DI: If you could intercept any quarterback, who would it be?
Rugamba: Cam Newton. I feel like he deserves an interception. I’m not a big Panther fan.
DI: Who’s your favorite musical artist?
Rugamba: Future. My favorite song is “March Madness.”
DI: Who’s the best dancer on the team?
Rugamba: Me. Easily.
DI: Do you have a show you like to binge-watch on Netflix?
Rugamba: I binge-watch “Family Guy,” “The Cleveland Show,” “Blacklist,” “American Dad,” “Dexter” … I don’t know, I might have a problem.
DI: Who’s the biggest trash talker on the team?
Rugamba: It might be Devonte Young. He’s pretty good at it, too. Sometimes, he’ll get under your skin.
DI: What’s your most memorable play from high school?
Rugamba: It was the semifinal game to go to the state championship. It was a fourth and 10, and I was a sophomore in high school. I ran this curl route and [the quarterback] threw the ball toward the ground, [and I] laid on the ground and caught it for the first down. Then we ran the ball to win the game, and we went to state.
