Pedestrian Mall shooting suspect Lamar Wilson, 23, will ask a judge to dismiss charges against him in a hearing Friday using Iowa’s “stand your ground” defense, which allows people to use deadly force to protect themselves in the event that they believe they are in imminent danger.
Wilson will also motion for change of venue and to dismiss the criminal gang participation charge against him, according to online court documents.
Friday’s hearing at the Johnson County District Court is a case management hearing in which the court will consider Wilson’s motions.
Authorities have charged Wilson, who faces a first-degree-murder charge in connection with fatal shooting on the Ped Mall Aug. 27, with an additional charge of criminal gang participation, a Class-D felony, and three counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon.
Iowa City police previously said the shooting was not a random act and that the incident was between two known “groups,” one of which was from Iowa City. The police have also said the men charged in the shooting, as well as the victims, had, or have, criminal histories.
The shooting occurred near the Sheraton Hotel, 210 S. Dubuque St., and resulted in the death of Iowa City resident Kaleek Jones, 22. Two other victims were taken to the hospital.
Wilson’s trial is scheduled for Nov. 7. He is being held on a $1.75 million bond.
