Dale Miller, 20, address unknown, was charged Oct. 14 with second-degree theft and possession of methamphetamine.
According to the arrest affidavit, Miller was caught taking a white bicycle from a bike rack at 140 W. Washington St. in Iowa City and leaving with it. When questioned, the affidavit said, Miller told officers he knew the bicycle was not his, and he did not intended to return it.
After his arrest, the affidavit said, two iPhone 7’s were found in Miller’s jacket. Miller told officers, the affidavit said, the phones were not his. Miller said he removes SIM cards and switches them to his number and carrier for his own personal use, the affidavit said.
The bicycle was valued at $399.99 and the phones cost $450 each, the affidavit said, making the overall value of the stolen items $1,299.99.
Officers also found a black case holding a digital scale, a glass pipe, empty baggies, and three bags with small amounts of methamphetamine, the affidavit said.
Miller admitted to possessing the methamphetamine, the affidavit said, and he said he carries the scale to ensure he’s “not getting ripped off.”
Second-degree theft is a Class-D felony.
