Authorities have accused an Iowa City man of possessing marijuana.
John Rankins, 24, 2110 Broadway, was charged July 31 with a controlled-substance violation.
According to the arrest affidavit, officers went to the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St., on Monday to give Rankins a seven-day trespass warning in relation to an earlier incident. When officers arrived, the affidavit said, Rankins smelled strongly of marijuana. After leaving the library, the affidavit said, an officer noticed a sandwich bag hanging out of Rankins’ pocket.
Rankins told officers he smoked marijuana earlier that day, the affidavit said, and he allowed officers to search his pockets. In the sandwich bag, the affidavit said, officers discovered seven pouches of marijuana.
Rankins was arrested, the affidavit said, and he later said he has sold 60 pouches of marijuana for $10 each.
Controlled-substance violation is a Class-D felony.
