The No. 13 Iowa men’s gymnastics team topped the No. 9 California Golden Bears, 399.900 – 396.550, in a rather large upset Monday night on the west coast.

Nine gymnasts recorded 12 season bests, as senior Andrew Botto (vault) and junior Elijah Parsells (pommel) took home event titles.

Botto finished second on all-around with a season-best score of 79.400.

On vault, Iowa scored a season-high of 71.450. Botto took first place with a 14.500, junior Dylan Ellsworth tied for second with a 14.300, senior Mark Springett earned a 14.250 for third place and freshman Josh Zeal set a individual best with a 14.200 and fourth place.

The Hawkeyes set a season-high on floor with a 67.900. Springett led the Hawkeyes in the event as well as tied his season-high of 14.300 that earned him a second place tie. Senior Cory Paterson made his season debut with the Hawkeyes, recording a 13.800 and tying for fourth.

Their third season-high overall score was on high bar with a 67.400. Junior Austin Hodges led the Hawkeyes with a 13.650 to tie for second overall. Sophomore Rogelio Vazquez and Paterson earned season-bests of 13.600, which put them in a tie for third place.

On rings, the Hawkeyes tallied a 66.300. Ellsworth, who scored a 13.850, earned second place in the event, while Botto finished fourth with a 13.650. Freshman Nick Merryman earned a new season-high of 13.350.

Hodges finished third on parallel bars with a season best of 13.700, Vazquez followed close behind in fourth place with a season debut of 13.300. Overall, Iowa scored a total 64.950 on parallel bars.

Last but not least, on pommel horse the Hawkeyes tallied a 61.900. Parsells led the Hawkeyes with a season-high 13.750 and took the first place title. Paterson came in behind in third place with a 12.500.

The Hawkeyes will return home to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. for their first tri-meet of the season against Oklahoma and Minnesota.
