On Dec. 1, the Daily Iowan offices received a set of phone calls beginning around 9:20pm from an Iowa woman. The woman, Melyssa Jo Kelly, talked on the phone to two DI employees in two separate phone calls. In both calls, she made threats to the staff.
Staff members asked her to stop calling, but she continued, leaving 4 more voicemails.
In the calls, Kelly used a fake name and made comments such as saying “I’ll see you in (expletive),” “wake the (expletive) up,” “dig a (expletive) hole,” and “brick walls won’t protect you.”
Kelly explicitly threatened a student staff member and a professional staff member and made general threats toward the newsroom.
According to court records, Kelly faces six counts of first-degree harassment. She is being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $6,000 bond.
