It wasn’t pretty, but as the final buzzer sounded in Carver-Hawkeye on Jan. 8, the Iowa men’s basketball team evened its Big Ten record at 2-2, defeating Rutgers, 68-62.

The turnover bug bit the Hawkeyes in the game; they committed 18. Conversely, they only assisted on 16 baskets.

However, the Hawkeyes were able to force quite a few turnovers of their own down the stretch because Rutgers wasn’t able to handle the Hawkeyes’ 1-2-2 press.

Peter Jok again led the Hawkeyes in scoring with 18. He added 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Cordell Pemsl (13) and Dom Uhl (10) joined Jok in double-digit scoring.

Uhl had a career day, pulling in 8 rebounds along with his 10 points. Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery was pleased with his play.

“He was spectacular,” McCaffery said after the game in an interview. “I thought he played well the other night … I went to him, he performed well in the first half.”

The Hawkeyes next have a rematch with Purdue on Jan. 12 in Carver-Hawkeye. In the previous meeting between the two schools, the Boilermakers stomped their way to a victory, 89-67.
