Peter Jok joined an elite group of 50 college basketball players Tuesday — the senior guard was named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watch list.
The Wooden Award is one of the most prestigious awards in college basketball, given to the best player in the nation.
So far this season, Jok is averaging 20 points, a team high. In Iowa’s season-opener against Kennesaw State, he scored 27 points on 11-of-19 shooting (in only 26 minutes).
During his junior season, he averaged 16.1 points per game and led the team in 3-pointers made (80) as well as free-throw percentage (.852).
Those top 50 prospects will eventually be slimmed down to the country’s top 15. From there, close to 1,000 voters will contribute to the award, narrowing down the list to 10.
In the last 10 seasons, the winners of the Wooden Award include Anthony Davis, Blake Griffin, and Kevin Durant.
Last season, Iowa’s Jarrod Uthoff made it to the Wooden Award national ballot.
This isn’t the first time Jok’s name appeared on award lists this season. He was also named to the preseason All-Big Ten first team and made the watch list for both the 2017 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year and the 2017 Naismith Trophy.
