Iowa senior wide receiver Matt VandeBerg injured his foot on Monday at practice, according to a release sent out by the program Tuesday morning.
VandeBerg, who is sidelined indefinitely, leads the Hawkeyes in catches, yards, and touchdowns this season.
The loss of Iowa’s top receiving target could not come at a worse time. The Hawkeye offense has not been clicking as of late, and VandeBerg was one of the lone bright spots in the loss to North Dakota State, with 2 touchdown grabs.
Sophomores Jerminic Smith and Jay Scheel will now assume more responsibility in the offense, as will senior Riley McCarron. Receiver Jonathan Parker, who suffered an injury this summer, could be back practicing in as little as a couple weeks, and he could possibly fill a role.
Other possible options could be Derrick Mitchell Jr., who came to Iowa as a receiver but converted to running back last season. Mitchell’s workload has decreased in the backfield the last couple weeks, so he has snaps open.
