Illinois head coach Lovie Smith spoke to members of the media at Big Ten Media Days to discuss the upcoming 2016-2017 season.
- Smith opened his presser expressing how thrilled he is to be in the Big Ten. “It’s a honor and privilege to be a coach of Illinois. I’m excited about starting the football season,” Smith said.
- The head coach believes that Illinois is “Chicago’s team.”
- “Great academics and lots of potential in football program,” Smith said.
- Smith noted that he would like for his team to be in conversation in years to come. “We’re not there yet competing for a championship, but would like to be there in due time. We realize we have to put a better product on the field,” Smith said.
- Smith said there are “Lots of seniors on the field.” “Gives him hope.”
- “Recruiting has gone well,” Smith said. Noted that recruiting has been successful inside and outside of Chicago.
- “Full acceptance from day one. They’ve embraced everything we’ve asked them to do. “We feel like we have a formula.”
- “Strength of team is our defensive mind,” Smith said.
