Iowa City curbs on the streets are getting a makeover to be compliant with the American Disabilities Act, which became a law in 1990 that makes it illegal for discrimination against individuals with disabilities in public areas.
In May of 2014, Iowa City received a complaint that its curbs are not handicap accessible.
The U.S. Department of Justice has opened an investigation to redesign curb ramps that would give better mobility to those in wheelchairs.
Iowa City officials are taking steps to solve this problem.
“I do think it’s an important thing. I want to make sure that we have accessibility across Iowa City,” At-Large mayor pro tem Kingsley Botchway said. “Now we’re in pothole season, tearing up the street, having to redo it spend money.”
