Iowa 149-pounder Brandon Sorensen has been named Co-Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Sorensen shares the honor with Penn State’s Bo Nickal. The award comes after an impressive run at the Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30 in which he won his weight class with an overtime victory over Northwestern’s Jason Tsirtsis.
Tsirtsis and Sorensen have quite a rivalry; the pair met three times last season, once in a dual, once in the Big Ten Championships, and again in the NCAA meet.
Sorensen was impressive throughout the event and also defeated Nebraska’s Jake Sueflohn in the semifinals. This came in addition to the fall and technical fall he had during the first two rounds.
The award is the third of Sorensen’s career; he won it twice in January 2015 during the early stages of his breakout freshman season. He is the second Hawkeye to win the award this season; 184-pounder Sammy Brooks received the honor on Nov. 17, 2015, after a thrilling victory against Oklahoma State.
The Hawkeyes will be back in action on Jan. 8, when they head to Champaign, Illinois, to face the Illini.
