Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz speaks with the media each Tuesday during the football season. Every week, The Daily Iowan‘s Pregame Staff will post highlights and interesting quotes and lines from Ferentz’s press conference.
…
Game time is 7:12 on BTN. We’ll know what the kickoff plan is for Purdue on Saturday night.
- Ferentz: “I’m sorry I missed Tom, usually that’s enlightening and entertaining when he’s around.”
- Same four captains — Ott, Lomax, Blythe, Beathard
- Hawkeyes are expecting Canzeri to be back Saturday against Minnesota. Ike Boettger could go, but doesn’t sound as sure as Canzeri.
- Ferentz thanks Jerry Kill for being a positive impact on Minnesota, the Big Ten, and College Football. “We’re very, very saddened by that news.”
- “Kinnick is a very special environment to play college football.” Ferentz says he’s expecting nothing less Saturday night against Minnesota.
- Ferentz said he thinks Jordan Canzeri could have played last week. Said the LeShun Daniels Jr. situation made that decision. Didn’t want to rush a guy back until they were 100-percent sure what was going to happen.
- Ferentz says Tevaun Smith has improved every day, but was sore on Sunday after the game. Should be fine for Minnesota.
- Ferentz said he’s a wrestling fan, not an expert, not a novice, but he’s a fan. Calls the Grapple on the Gridiron a win-win situation.
- Ferentz said his love for wrestling began in the winter of 1982 when he got to watch a dual in the old Fieldhouse.
- Calls Dan Gable a “tremendous human being and family guy.”
- “If you like sports I don’t know how you can’t like wrestling.”
- Ferentz said he loved it when his offensive linemen would go over to the wrestling room and compete with the heavyweights. Doesn’t happen often anymore, but loved when it was commonplace.
- On the Minnesota game last season — “They did what they were supposed to do, we didn’t. Says Iowa got what it deserved last season against the Gophers.”
- “If we have all four running backs healthy, we’re a better team.”
- Ferentz said holding and pass interference are the hardest calls in football.
- On the new uniforms for the Minnesota game — “I guess I have veto power, it’s like being the governor, I guess.” Says it was a “really dramatic moment in my life” when the team saw the uniforms in person for the first time. “It’s a fun thing, what the heck, I’m all for it.”
