Although it’s flu season, there have been no reported cases so far this year.
University Health and Wellness gives 4,000 flu shots a year but many students opt to get their vaccines elsewhere.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, students who get a flu shot are 30 percent less likely to get the flu.
Lisa James, clinical outreach associate director, said they recommend students get the shot as soon as it is available.
“It takes a couple weeks for immunity to develop,” she said. “And there’s usually no flu in our area … sometimes in rare cases there will be flu cases in November.”
Also in the air this month and calling for a vaccine is mumps. But this vaccine may not be up to par.
In July, there were three mumps cases reported at the UI and that number has now increased to a confirmed 80 cases.
The vaccine only protects 69-88 percent and nearly all 80 people diagnosed with mumps had gotten the shot.
