On Monday, the Pentacrest became the corniest place on campus in honor of the weeklong Homecoming celebration. The Hawkeye Corn Monument stands more than 20 feet tall and contains thousands of corn ears.
The Campus Activities Board partnered with the American Society of Civil Engineers to bring the statue to life.
“It’s a great start to Homecoming Week and an amazing example of spirit on our campus,” said Alexis Nguyen, the activities board traditions director.
The Hawkeye Corn Monument became an annual UI Homecoming tradition in 1919. However, for reasons unknown, the ritual ceased in the 1960s. Last year, it was revived with a replica of the original corn monument. Nguyen said she hopes the monument will be something the Iowa City community looks forward to seeing for many years to come.
“We can’t forget where we came from and where we first started,” she said.
